# Steve Harvey: The Heartbreaking Journey Behind the Laughter

Born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, Harvey was the youngest of five in a family grappling with hardship. His father, Jesse, toiled in coal mines, while his mother, Eloise, stretched every penny as a teacher.
Moving to Cleveland’s rough East 112th Street, young Steve battled a stutter and faced mockery for dreaming of being on TV. His teacher tore up his aspiration, but his father urged him to rewrite it and hold onto it as a promise—a mantra that guided him through adversity.
After high school in 1974, Harvey drifted through jobs—mail carrier, mechanic, even boxer—none fulfilling his dream. In 1985, a dare led him to an open mic night in Cleveland.
His first jokes stumbled, but the laughter and $50 prize changed everything. Quitting his job, he pursued comedy, enduring three brutal years living in his 1976 Ford, using gas station sinks as bathrooms and battling hunger. Yet, he clung to his father’s words, whispering his dream in despair.
His breakthrough came in 1990 as a finalist in the Johnny Walker National Comedy Search, followed by hosting *Showtime at the Apollo* for seven years. Success, however, demanded sacrifices. His first marriage to Marsha, with whom he had three children, crumbled under career pressures, ending in 1994.
A second marriage to Mary Shackelford in 1996 also failed by 2005, marred by public accusations and financial ruin. That year, with only $1,700 in his account and a seven-year tax filing failure, he faced debts threatening prison and disgrace. Humiliated, he worked tirelessly, using radio shows and books like *Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man* (2009) to rebuild.
Taking over *Family Feud* in 2010, Harvey skyrocketed ratings, becoming a nightly staple in American homes. Yet, every paycheck went to the IRS, and fears of financial collapse lingered.
Personal redemption came with Marjorie Bridges, whom he married in 2007. She brought calm to his chaos, helping build a blended family of seven children. A 2015 tribute from Marjorie’s son, calling him “Dad,” moved him to tears, symbolizing healing from past regrets.
Today, Harvey’s empire spans *Family Feud*, radio, and ventures like Elevate You.
