But behind the scenes, a darker reality unfolded—cast members faced shocking deaths, arrests, and scandals that tarnished the show’s legacy.
The series originated from a documentary pitch, evolving into a hit with stars like Troy Landry, whose “Choot ’em!” battle cry became iconic. Cast included the Edwards family—Junior, Willie, and Randy—and the Molinaires, R.J. and J. Paul, who hunted massive gators. Filming was grueling: humid swamps, equipment failures, and risks amplified by cameras. Viewership soared, reaching 3.9 million in season 2.
Tragedy struck early. Mitchell Guist died from natural causes in 2012 at 47, collapsing on his boat. Randy Edwards perished in a 2018 car crash, impaired and unbuckled. Bill Booth died in a 2020 ATV accident.
Junior Edwards succumbed to COPD and pneumonia in 2025 at 61. Bruce Mitchell’s dog, Tyler, died in 2014, breaking his heart. Accidents like Liz Cavalier’s boat capsize in 2020 highlighted dangers.
Scandals marred the image. In 2013, R.J. and J. Paul Molinaire were charged with aggravated battery after a road rage attack, ending their run. In 2024, Troy Landry was caught in an illegal hunting sting, charged for improper tagging and evidence tampering. Behind-the-scenes revelations exposed fakeness: staged hunts, fake family dynamics, and rushed filming—same outfits worn for entire seasons.
Health issues plagued stars. Big T fought infections from foot wounds in 2019 and 2020. Ashley Deadey Jones tore her rotator cuff in 2021. Ronnie Adams stepped away for family health crises. Troy’s grandson battled biliary atresia, needing a transplant.
The show declined. Viewership dropped 85% by 2025, from 4.5 million to 633,000. No season 17 renewal as of September 2025. Spin-off “Serpent Invasion” faced backlash for staged scenes, angering conservationists.
